One of Sark’s most distinctive coastal spots, combining a small pebble beach with an adjacent semi-man-made natural pool beside the island’s original historic landing place. L’Eperquerie occupies the northern tip of Sark beneath the open headland known as L’Eperquerie Common. Until Creux Harbour opened in 1588, L’Eperquerie was Sark’s principal landing place, giving the beach an important place in the island’s history. Remains of the former fortifications, including walls, a bastion and guardhouse, can still be seen around the headland. The name is believed to come from the perques, the wooden stakes on which fish and conger eels were once dried on the common above.
Immediately beside the beach is a semi-man-made natural pool. Sark Tourism recommends it for children from around half tide towards low tide, particularly for paddling, fishing and sailing toy boats. Even so, children should always remain supervised, and conditions and water depth vary with every tide.
The beach is reached by footpaths descending from L’Eperquerie Common across uneven natural ground, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Several walking routes continue around the dramatic northern headland, with extensive views across the surrounding coastline, and in summer you may see the Isle of Sark passenger ferry passing offshore, its wake often sending a series of waves towards the shore.
No lifeguard service is currently listed. Sark Tourism highlights the beach for swimming from around half tide to high tide; check the depth, waves and ease of entering the water before swimming, take care over rounded pebbles and slippery rocks, avoid the water in rough seas, be aware of the ferry wake, and keep a close eye on children moving between the beach and the pool. Do not jump or dive unless the depth and underwater hazards are reliably known.
Rocks and pools around the beach are exposed as the tide falls; leave any marine life undisturbed and return any moved stones carefully.
