About the beach

Pembroke & L’Ancresse

Pembroke and L’Ancresse lie side by side on Guernsey’s north coast, with Pembroke at the western end and L’Ancresse at the eastern end. Together they form a long stretch of pale sand backed by L’Ancresse Common. The broad shoreline has plenty of room for walking, paddling and beach games, and at lower water a wide area of sand and some rocky pools are exposed. The common behind the beaches contains prehistoric burial sites, historic coastal towers and Second World War defences.

Food, toilets, parking and beach access are available at both ends. Pembroke has The Beach House, Pembroke Slipway Kiosk, an adapted public toilet and bookable beach wheelchairs, while L’Ancresse has a smaller seasonal kiosk and separate facilities. Beach wheelchairs can be booked for use at Pembroke; availability, suitability and assistance requirements should be confirmed with the provider before travelling. The availability of a beach wheelchair does not mean that every route or part of the natural beach is independently wheelchair-accessible.

Tide & the beach

At low water, a very wide expanse of sand is exposed and the sea can be a long walk from the slips, giving plenty of space for walking, games and rock pooling. Around higher water the sea is closer to the main access points and is often more convenient for swimming and paddling. The broad, shallow shoreline is popular with families, but depth, waves and water movement still change with the tide and weather. Check conditions and supervise children closely around the water.
