About the beach

Petit Bôt

Petit Bôt lies at the foot of a steep, wooded valley. At higher water the sea reaches the pebbled upper shore; as the tide retreats, a sandy beach, rocky areas and pools are uncovered. A loopholed tower built in 1778–79 and the Petit Bôt Tea Room overlook the slip. The sheltered shape of the cove makes it popular with swimmers and families, although wind, waves and water movement can still affect conditions.

Parking is available close to the bay, but the upper beach is steep, very uneven and covered with large pebbles and rocks. Lower down, the gradient becomes gentler and sand is exposed as the tide falls. The approach road through the valley is steep and narrow, and the presence of nearby parking does not make the natural beach wheelchair-accessible.

Tide & the beach

Around higher water the sea is close to the slip and covers much of the pebbled upper shore, making it a popular time for swimming. Swimming is possible at other tide states when conditions are suitable. As the tide falls, sand, rocky margins and pools are exposed. The upper beach remains steep and uneven, and rocks visible at lower water may become submerged as the sea rises. Check conditions and your exit point before entering.
