About the beach

Saints Bay

Saints Bay is a secluded sandy cove surrounded by south-coast cliffs. The upper shore is formed by a steep bank of large pebbles, while a wider sandy beach is exposed as the tide falls. A small fishermen’s landing lies a short walk from the main beach, with fishing and leisure boats using the cove.

Saints Bay Beach Kiosk and seasonal toilets sit above the shore, while Saints Bay Tower stands nearby. The bay can be reached down a steep lane from St Martin’s or by the surrounding cliff paths; the final 200 metres of road are normally pedestrian-only, although Blue Badge holders may drive to the small parking area near the kiosk. The route onto the beach has a steep, uneven flagstone slope without a handrail, so the natural beach is not independently wheelchair-accessible.

Tide & the beach

At higher water the sea reaches the pebble bank and covers much of the sandy lower shore. As the tide falls, the beach widens and more sand is exposed. Swimming is possible at different tide states when conditions are suitable, but entry and exit across the steep pebble bank may be awkward. Small boats can move through the cove at any state of tide, so remain visible and avoid obstructing craft travelling to or from the fishermen’s landing.
