A long shingle-and-sand bay on Guernsey’s south-west coast, overlooked by Fort Grey and popular for sunsets, walking and fishing.

Rocquaine is a long south-west-facing bay and one of Guernsey’s relatively few shingle beaches, with patches of sand and rocky foreshore exposed through the tide. It lies between L’Erée to the north and Portelet to the south, forming part of a long open stretch of coastline.
Fort Grey, known locally as the “Cup and Saucer”, stands on a small tidal islet connected to the shore. The Martello tower was built in 1804 and now houses Guernsey’s Shipwreck Museum. Guernsey Pearl Café sits across the coast road, while Portelet Kiosk, public toilets and The Imperial Hotel are towards the southern end of the bay. The annual Rocquaine Regatta brings boat races, beach activities and entertainment to the bay during summer.
At lower water, a broad area of sand, shingle and rocky foreshore is exposed along Rocquaine. As the tide rises, the available shore narrows and some rocky routes become wet or submerged. The bay is exposed to westerly wind and swell, which can produce larger waves and rougher swimming conditions, and shingle and submerged rocks can make entry and exit uneven. Check the sea, wind and your route back to shore rather than relying on the tide time alone.
Tides. Tide predictions are forecasts. Actual sea level is affected by atmospheric pressure, wind and waves. Always observe the sea and your surroundings.
Swimming. Sea swimming carries risks: currents, waves, rocks, submerged structures, boats and cold water. This page is for planning and does not confirm conditions are safe. Do not assume the beach is lifeguarded.
